How to achieve smaller, smarter, more reliable power management?

Due to its small size, high efficiency and low power consumption, PMIC is an essential component in small devices such as wearables, hearables and Internet of Things devices. With Qorvo's Configurable Smart Power Solution (ActiveCiPS™), these tiny, high-performance Pmics maximize system efficiency and performance while providing design flexibility and reducing bill of materials costs.

In this industry, it's easy to take power for granted. What is valuable is not known until it is lost. Managing this important resource is critical to the proper functioning of systems and can be a real challenge in areas where smaller, faster, and smarter devices are needed. But what if a built-in power management device helps solve that problem? Qorvo's Configurable Smart Power Solution (ActiveCiPS™) devices help control, monitor and optimize power distribution and conversion in different systems with built-in intelligence and configurability.

In complex systems, or when designers need more advanced or innovative power solutions, using discrete components may be too expensive. A power management integrated circuit (PMIC) integrates multiple voltage regulators and control circuits into a single chip. Today's Pmics are flexible, allowing users to update default Settings such as output voltage, timing, failure thresholds, and other parameters. As a result, PMIC is used in many small devices, such as wearables, wearable devices and Internet of Things devices, all benefiting from their small size, high efficiency and low power consumption. These tiny, high-performance Pmics maximize system efficiency and performance while providing design flexibility and reducing bill of Materials costs.

Because ActiveCiPS PMIC products are configurable, Qorvo offers an ActiveCiPS programmed dongle that enables designers to configure the PMIC multiple times during the design process. This makes debugging easier and can speed up the product to market. By programming the dongle, the designer can generate custom programming examples over and over until the desired functionality is implemented. After the customer has optimized the PMIC for their system, Qorvo will deliver the IC built and tested to these Settings.

As an example of power management intelligence, consider systems that use gallium nitride (GaN) power amplifiers, such as phased array radar and satellite communications. Powering an RF power amplifier (RFPA) requires specific bias timing and calibration of the RF prior to transmitting it. GaN devices are depletion type FETs which require negative grid voltage to be applied during operation. A negative grid voltage must be applied before the drain bias voltage is increased to protect the device from damage. Different GaN PA require different drain voltages at different power levels. Calibration is also required to achieve an ideal static current at the drain for better performance.

And ics such as the ACT41000 ActiveCiPS power management device can help customers do just that. ACT41000 configurability and built-in intelligence enable the system to automatically calibrate when powered on and then provide the required startup timing. Automatic calibration can be performed after system deployment to provide aging compensation over time. It comes with ActiveCiPS Programmed Dongle and GUI, enabling designers to adjust:

● Output drain voltage
● Static and maximum drain current
●PA device current and voltage protection
● Switching frequency
● Other features of GaN PA performance are optimized

Qorvo ActiveCiPS offers size, weight, power, and cost advantages, and the ability to intelligently optimize power for multiple needs.
