Diodes introduces dual digital interface, multi-channel LED drivers for RGB and monochrome solid-state lighting leds
0
Diodes announced the launch of its latest linear current LED driver, DIODES AL5887. The product provides a simple way to drive numerous leds to achieve complex color blends and different lighting patterns. It integrates I2C and SPI interface options to provide maximum system design flexibility. With a wide color adjustment range and a wide dynamic brightness range, the device can be used in smart home appliances, electric vehicle charging stations, infotainment system displays, Internet of Things information indicators and computing hardware.

The AL5887 has a total of 36 separate programmable channels capable of driving up to 12 sets of RGB LED modules or 36 monochrome leds. It features an internal 12-bit pulse width modulator for color adjustment and a 6-bit analog brightness controller, accessible via SPI or I2C interfaces. And there are three programmable groups for software control of each color, making it easier to program and set RGB lighting module patterns.

Each channel has a separate color mixing and brightness register for a better color mixing scheme. The dimming function relies on a 3 to 100 percent PWM duty cycle. Once duty cycle falls below 3%, the internal circuit converts the output to analog dimming, maintaining linearity. By combining PWM and analog dimming functions, dimming ratios greater than 100K: 1 can be achieved.

The AL5887 combines advanced diagnostics with fault reporting capabilities. Its comprehensive built-in protection features ensure reliable operation and continuous safety, including short circuit and LED open circuit protection as well as overheating shutdown. Prior heat shutdown warnings also help with earlier system protection. The device uses two external hardware address pins to connect up to four of these devices together in I2C mode. A built-in 16MHz oscillator eliminates the need for an external high-precision clock, thereby reducing overall bill of Materials (BOM) costs.
