Infineon introduces the first PFC and hybrid flyback combination IC for mobile and battery-powered devices
0

Infineon has introduced a new XDP digital power supply, the XDPS2221. This highly integrated USB-PD combination controller IC supports high power designs for wide input and output voltage applications, up to 28V output voltage. The device integrates the AC/DC PFC controller with the DC-DC HFB(also known as asymmetric half-bridge (AHB)) in a single package. By coordinating these two phases, regulatory needs can be easily met.

In addition, further integration of all gate drivers and 600V high-voltage start units for initial IC voltage supply, as well as certified active X-capacitor discharge, can reduce the external BOM and component count. Based on the new ZVS HFB topology, combined with GAN-based equipment, it delivers leading efficiency in many line/load conditions. Because of these characteristics and inherent topological advantages, including zero voltage switching and resonant energy transfer to reduce transformer size, system designs utilizing the device can provide very high power density.

In addition, the new combined IC provides synchronous PFC and HFB burst-mode operation for minimal no-load input backup power performance. Quasi-resonant multi-mode PFC stages are improved with automatic PFC enable/disable functions and adaptive PFC bus voltage control to maximize average and light load efficiency. Optionally, the integrated PFC feature can also be disabled to support any external PFC controller use case.

The hybrid flyback stage utilizes peak current control operation to achieve robust regulation and fast dynamic load response. To provide ZVS operation in all conditions, the hybrid flyback features ZVS pulse insertion and a combination of hybrid diode cross conduction prevention in interrupted conduction mode. In addition, the device provides easy-to-configure parameters through the GUI to optimize system performance.
