Texas Instruments DRV8251 and DRV8251A are integrated motor drivers with n-channel half-bridge, charging pump, current regulation, protection circuit, and current induced feedback (DRV8251A). The charging pump increases efficiency by supporting N-channel MOSFET half-bridge and 100% duty cycle drive.
The DRV8251A has an internal current mirroring architecture on the IPROPI pin for current detection and regulation. This eliminates the need for high-power shunt resistor, saves circuit board area and reduces system cost. IPROPI current detection output enables microcontrollers (MCU) to detect motor stall or load condition changes. The external reference voltage pin (VREF) determines the threshold for current regulation during the start and stop events without interacting with the MCU.
The DRV8251 provides current regulation by comparing the voltage of the analog input VREF with that of the current detecting shunt resistor on the ISEN pin. The current limiting capability can significantly reduce high current in motor startup and stall situations.
Low power sleep mode achieves low static current consumption by shutting down most of the internal circuits. Internal protection functions include power undervoltage lock (UVLO), output overcurrent protection (OCP), and thermal shutdown (TSD).
