Stmicroelectronics single chip three frequency satellite navigation receiver to improve vehicle positioning accuracy
0
STMicroelectronics has launched the world's first automotive satellite navigation chip capable of providing high-quality position data for automotive advanced driving systems. A new member of stmicroelectronics' Teseo V product family, STA8135GA is the world's first vehicle gauge GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) receiver chip that integrates a three-frequency position measurement engine on chip, in addition to standard multi-frequency position-speed-time (PVT) and dead reckoning functions.

Three-frequency position measurements have historically been used for professional-grade equipment requiring millimeter-level positioning accuracy with little need to correct data, such as surveying and mapping instruments and fine agricultural equipment. Previously, the only commercially available tri-band solutions were chipsets or modules, which were large in size and sold at a high price compared to ST's monolithic solution. Tri-frequency receivers capture and track the largest number of satellites in multiple navigation constellations simultaneously, enabling superior positioning performance in harsh environments such as urban canyons and tree cover.

Bringing a triple-frequency receiver to the automotive market in a compact, easy-to-integrate package, the STA8135GA helps driver assistance systems make accurate judgments about conditions on the road ahead. The multi-constellation receiver is responsible for providing raw position information to the master control system, while the master controller runs precise positioning algorithms, for example, PPP/RTK (precise point positioning/real-time motion). In addition, STA8135GA can enhance the performance of other applications, including in-vehicle navigation systems, telematics devices, smart antennas and V2X communication systems, Marine navigation systems, unmanned aerial vehicles and other vehicles.

Luca Celant, General Manager, AAA (ADAS, ASIC and Audio), stmicroelectronics Automotive and Discrete Devices Products Division, said: "The STA8135GA satellite receiver has high measurement accuracy and monolithic integration, allowing developers to design reliable, cost-effective navigation systems that make cars safer to drive and more environmentally aware. Our unique in-house design resources and mass manufacturing skills are one of the elements that made this industry-first product possible."
