Bourns introduces LAN transformers with shielded Gigabit Ethernet /PoE+ chips for high speed telecommunications and EMI suppression

     Bourns has introduced two new lines of shielded Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) chip LAN transformers. The Bourns SM453230-121N7YP and SM453230-231N7YP series are small, thin and discrete solutions that provide designers with additional board layout flexibility compared to traditional Chip-LAN modules. In addition, Bourns' new transformers support high network speeds of up to 10 Gbps, are capable of supplying PoE+ with 700 mA of current and provide a temperature range of -40 to +85 °C. They are capable of 1500 VAC/60 s high voltage isolation and withstand pulse voltages up to 2400 V and 1.2/50 μs. These advanced features make them ideal for high-speed telecommunications and networking equipment

     Because of the range of bit rates they handle, the two transformers differ in terms of inductance, insertion loss, and capacitance characteristics. The Bourns SM453230-231N7YP model supports 1, 2.5, and 5 Gbes, while the SM453230-121N7YP model supports 10 Gbes. The former can be paired with Bourns® SRF2012-900YA common mode chip inductors, while the latter can be paired with SRF2012A-801Y. These small, center-tapped transformers are wound around a drum core and covered with ferrite plates to simulate the closed magnetic circuit of a toroidal core. Common-mode suppression is possible even without additional common-mode filters at the center taps, and the new series helps reduce EMI troubleshooting efforts.

     Bourns uses its fully automated production process for both new models, resulting in improved component consistency, quality and reliability. In addition, the process can be adapted to mass production by shortening production lead time and reducing cost.
