Renesas Electronics' smart meter solution integrates 4G communications and dual electrical layer capacitors (EDLC) for intelligent control and an always-on system. The ISL85403 buck-boost regulator implements a self-cycling EDLC backup and can theoretically discharge EDLC down to 0.1V. This greatly improves the working efficiency of EDLC and reduces the system cost. In addition, the RL78/L13 microcontroller (MCU) is ideal for measuring devices and power meters with ultra-low power consumption and built-in segmented LCD display drivers.

     EDLC is a super capacitor with short charging time, high power density, long service cycle, good temperature performance, environmental protection and other characteristics. edlc can be used as a backup power supply instead of traditional batteries (which have defects such as electrolyte leakage). When the power is turned off for a few minutes, the EDLC's power supply can be used for data backup, wireless communication and other functions.
