Renesas' FSoE control reference design features safe motor drive and safe industrial network control

     Renesas's EtherCAT (FSoE) -based Functional Safety Control Safety Drive system includes two separate RX72N 32-bit microcontrollers (MCUS), so that control can be maintained and the power to the motor can be safely cut off if the system is in an unwanted state. The FSoE safety net is one of the most well-known security protocols in industrial systems.

     Safety data, such as an emergency stop, comes from a safety sensor or a safety Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) via the EtherCAT communication block. The two RX72N microcontrollers check these safety data separately, and if one of them indicates an emergency, one (or both) of the RX72N microcontrollers can cut off the power to the motor to avoid a dangerous situation.

     Safety control module consists of two RX72N microcontroller, responsible for motor emergency, stop control and safety protocol data processing. According to the international safety standard (IEC 61508, ISO 13849-1), redundancy is required in the system. This redundancy is achieved through a dual RX72N mcu. Each RX72N microcontroller operates the same process and can check each other through the cross-monitoring interface.

     Renesas supports software required for security control blocks, such as self-check software and control software systems (self-check packages and SIL3 system packages). By using these security solutions, customers can reduce development and certification time and costs. By separating the functional safe blocks (network devices or motor control devices) from the non-secure blocks (network devices or motor control devices), customers can easily design their applications.
