Renesas Electronics, a global provider of semiconductor solutions, announced the launch of the first development suite to support the new Matter protocol, and announced that it will be included in all future Wi-Fi, Bluetooth Low Power (BLE), and IEEE 802.15.4 (Thread) solutions. As well as its recently acquired Dialog Semiconductor and Celeno Communications products, offering support for Matter.

The Matter protocol promises to solve the interoperability problem of smart home devices by securely and robustly connecting a wide variety of smart devices from different manufacturers across the entire ecosystem. As an application-layer protocol, it abstractly encapsulates low-level connectivity technologies such as Wi-Fi, Thread, and Bluetooth Low Power. With a common software stack, device makers building products using the Matter protocol will support a variety of smart home ecosystems and voice services. Smart home users will also be able to shop for any matter-certified device, regardless of platform.

Renesas is a member of the Connectivity Standards Alliance (the "Alliance"). The alliance is the global organization creating standards and certification for the Internet of Things. "We are excited to see Renesas and other prominent developers in the Internet of Things industry commit to supporting the Matter standard," said Chris LaPre, director of technology at the Alliance. This is another indication that the standard is gaining positive momentum at the device manufacturer and component vendor levels."

"As the preeminent provider of embedded processing, connectivity is a key part of Renesas's iot solutions," said Sean McGrath, vice president of the Connectivity and Audio business group at Renesas Electronics iot and Infrastructure Business. "With our broad range of Bluetooth and Wi-Fi solutions and the Thread product under development, we are well positioned to leverage the full benefits of the Matter standard in a wide variety of applications we work with customers around the world."

Renesas has more than 10 years of experience in low-power Bluetooth and Wi-Fi technology. With more than 600 million wireless devices shipped, Renesas has built a wide range of wireless connectivity system-level chips for the Internet of Things, wearable products and home networks. Its development tools for Matter are easy to use and will help iot device makers looking to integrate their products into the Matter ecosystem get to market faster.
